Profile Of Kono District (source: Wikipedia)

Kono district is in the Eastern Province, and borders with Kenema district to the southwest, the Republic of Guinea to the east, Koinadugu district to the northeast and Kailahun district to the southeast. Its capital and the largest city is Koidu town. The other major towns in the district are Motema, Yengema, Tombodu, Jaiama Nimikoro and Sewafe. This district is divided into fourteen chiefdoms namely Fiama, Gbane, Gbane Kandor, Gbense, Gorama Kono, Kamara, Lei, Mafindor, Nimikoro, Nimiyama, Sandor, Soa, Tankoro, and Toli.

The population is religiously mixed between Muslim and Christians and home to many ethnic groups. During the decade long civil war (1991-2002), heavy fighting caused many people to flee their homes and there was widespread looting. The rich reserves of diamonds in the area were one of the main reasons for the fighting.

Population distribution: As indicated in the projected population for 2014, some 53% of the residents are among the active workforce between the age group 15-64 years, while 26% fall between 5-14 years of age group and 17% are under the age of 5 years (see table aside). Nearly 67% of the district population resides in rural areas. The average family size is 5.6.

Livelihood and Economy: Kono district is the largest diamond producer in Sierra Leone, gold and alluvial diamond mining are important economic activities of the residents. Although agriculture has not been the main source of livelihood of the majority (less than 30% rely on farming), in some areas rice, cassava, corn, and beans are grown and small groups of residents grow coffee, cacao and palm oil.

The diamond mining industry has attracted many people from other parts of the country to settle down in Kono, making the district a cosmopolitan one. Diamonds were first discovered in the area during the 1930s, local residents work as employees for the large foreign owned mining companies. 12% of the population are in poorest category and 30% fall into the medium poor category. Gini coefficient is 0.27 which is on the lower side (scale from 0-1)

According to the organizers, this exciting Reality TV Show is put together against the backdrop of promoting Youth Empowerment. Better put into perspective, Housemates Salone encompasses providing mentorship for young aspiring Sierra Leoneans who believe that they have talents that they could showcase that will not only be sources of entertainment for viewers but provide valuable insights as to the everyday behavioural patterns of young people living together.

However, the most important aspect of the Reality TV Show is that it will serve as a conduit through which the Housemates will be taken through mental and physical exercises that will end up to mould and shape their characters.

They stand to benefit from being guided to be motivational speakers, to think critically as well as rationally, how to healthily interact, how to solve problems, to cook, to sing, dance, control emotions and stress. They will have the opportunity to learn from what visiting guests from certain corporate institutions will teach them, learn how to play games and a host of other things that are aligned to coping mechanisms in life.

If it could be succinctly put in other words, Housemates Salone could be liken to a refinery where the competitors will go through life overhauling experiences to such an extent that life after Housemates Salone will be completely positively different for them.

Another good thing about the show is that it will put all the Housemates in the spotlight as the Reality TV Show will be watched by many in and out of the country. People will come to know them, the talents that they have and what they are capable of doing. The show could be a window of opportunity for the Housemates as some people out there could be interested in tapping the talents that they have seen displayed which could end up in changing their fortunes for life. Indeed something has to start somewhere!

This is a rare opportunity for young people who have the conviction that they have all what it takes to grab the mouth-watering winning prize of Two Hundred and Fifty Million Leones and a round trip to Dubai. That is all the more reason why it is high time to try and secure an application form as time flies.

Housemates Salone Season 2 is indeed back and set to be truly entertaining and unforgettable.

As the National Chairman of Coalition for Change writes Speaker of Parliament… PPRC says the Party Executive is Legitimate

Aiah P. Thomas Explains Administrative Inconsistences in Parliament

The spokesperson for the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC), Lucien Momoh, has responded to questions regarding the legitimacy of the national executive of the Coalition for Change (C4C) Party.

In a telephone interview with Lucien Momoh over the weekend, he clarified to this medium that the party’s national executive is legal and its legitimacy remains unquestionable.

“The national executive of the Coalition for Change is legal and legitimate,” Lucien Momoh asserted. He reiterated that the term of office of the current executive has not yet expired.

The questioning of the legitimacy of the C4C executive was first raised by the Hon. Emerson Lamina when he was reacting to the decision by his party to remove him from the leadership of the C4C Parliamentary Caucus.

The now embattled Honourable Member of Parliament had earlier told this press that the C4C executive does not have the locus standi to execute such action. And in a follow-up interview with him on Saturday August 1, he still maintains his ground. He even retorted that the PPRC does not know about their party's constitution.

In the last plenary sitting, the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Abass Bundu rebuffed the letter addressed to him by the C4C secretary-general informing him to effect the new changes made to the party’s parliamentary executive structure.

Mr. Speaker said: “Let me make it categorically and abundantly clear that I will discountenance the correspondence…and I will therefore continue to recognize the Hon. Emerson Lamina as the leader of the C4C Party in Parliament.”

Reacting to Mr. Speaker’s remarks, the C4C National Chairman Tamba Richard Sandi said the issue is an intra-party affair and the Speaker should not interfere.

He said: “The Speaker is in Parliament to superintend over the affairs of the House. He should not interfere with the internal affairs of our party.”

Tamba Sandi has already written to Mr. Speaker expressing perturbation over the latter’s belittlement of their party’s decision to remove Hon. Emerson Lamina from their parliamentary leadership structure.

Speaking to the party’s National Secretary General Koighor Aloysious Foh, he said that Mr. Speaker has nothing to tell them because he does not know anything about the Coalition for Change.

The response elicited from Lawrence Bolo Coker, national publicity secretary of the C4C, implied that the party would not allow external players to interfere and meddle with its affairs nor would they countenance or yield to external influence.

“We don’t encourage language such as standing orders," he retorted at Mr. Speaker, adding that the latter should state the specific house rules or standing orders violated.

KONO NEWS NETWORK

BY SAHR DAVID LEBBIE

The quality of education in Sierra Leone over the past decades has continued to degenerate to the point where the trend seriously undermines the human capacity development of the country's populace. Key to the degeneration is how much almost every facet of Sierra Leonean society participates in examination malpractices- pupils, students, teachers, examination officers, parents, police and so on.

In order to combat this situation a task force committee has been set up by the government to monitor, observe and assess public examinations in the country including NPSE, BECE, WASSCE. The committee comprises of teachers, Sierra Leone Teachers Union, Anti Corruption Commission and the Police Force.

Addressing the pupils, Mr. Fengai Morquee a teacher and doubles as the District representative of Sierra Leone Teachers Union encourages all and sundry to deviate from such malpractices. He thereby urges all students to maintain their integrity by studying to pass all examination. He also reminded all about the penalties one will face when caught.

KONGOBA FAMILY APPOLOGISE TO FORMER VP SAM SUMANA

12th July 2020

The Kongoba family has today paid a courtesy visit to Chief Sam Sumana at his residence to apologise for the unsavoury incident that manifested during the traditional rites ceremony of the SICK Paramount Chief.

In the process of the visit, the family disassociated themselves from the ugly incident that resulted in damage to Chief Sam Sumana's car and injury to his close protection detail.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Kelly thanked Chief Sam Sumana for the fatherly role he has and continue to play in the family.

From the inception of their father's grave illness to yesterday, they confirmed that Chief Sam Sumana has been instrumental and called on him to continue his good will towards the family.

As a family, they recognized him as a true family member.

He therefore condemned the unfortunate act on Chief Sam Sumana yesterday and emphasized that the Kongoba family will always continue to stand by him.

He commended Chief Sam Sumana for the peaceful manner he treated the unfortunate saga and emphasized that he has once again manifested that he is a man if peace. He stated that Chief Sam Sumana is the type of politician Sierra Leone needs, given our checkered history.

Chief Songum Briwa thanked the Kongoba family for the love and respect shown to Chief Sam Sumana and noted that their apology symbolises that they recognize the relevance of the role Chief Sam Sumana had played in the family now and in the past years.

Another relative present, Tamba Sandi, the C4C Chairman stated that he was impressed with the Kongoba family and called on them to continue the good relationship that is existing between the family and Chief Sam Sumana.

Responding, the former Vice President, Chief Sam Sumana extended profound gratitude to the Kongoba family for the respect and recognition accorded him.

Chief Sam Sumana told the family members that the name Kongoba is a household name in APC, saying the sick Chief has been a member of Parliament and a cabinet Minister in President J S Momoh regime and it was during the APC era that he became Paramount Chief, so if any political party wants to claim the sick body of PC Kongoba it would have been the APC party.

The Former VP said what the SLPP demonstrated yesterday was cheap politics and expressed happiness at the manner the family handled the issue.

He said what happened yesterday has been put under the carpet noting that this is not the time for politics and therefore called on SLPP not use this kind of forum to intimidate people.

He told the family that his doors are always open to them for any support or assistance as and when required.

His response was warmly received by the family as they departed to continue the traditional rites that need to be administered for such an outstanding Paramount Chief.

Statement from Minister Tamba Lamina on Late PC Kongoba's Funeral

The WhatsApp hype and misinformation is just an attempt on the part of light weight politicians to clamour for underserved attention. As Minister of Local Government and Rural Development with the mandate to provide support to and oversight over 190 Chiefdoms, how could a naive politician boxing above his weight be allowed to usurp my constitutional responsibility in the name of furthering his already flagged political capital?

The issue is simple, Sam Sumana's attempt to take over my role yesterday, was a clear attempt at embarrassing government. It was disrespectful and shameful to say the least. He only ended up embarrassing himself and such juvenile posturing has to stop. How dear him? The ceremony of the unwell Paramount Chief will continue as planned with the Ministry of Local Government playing a critical role in ensuring that a deserving Paramount Chief is provided a very dignified treatment in accordance with the customs and traditions of the people of Mafindor Chiefdom.

Effects of Mining on Soa Cash Crop Farmers

Kono is endowed with variety of minerals. Different Chiefdoms have been reservoirs of diamond and gold.

Successive governments have developed different mining contracts, most of which did not translate into any meaningful development for the chiefdoms and the district in general.

The people of Kono have been craving for better mining conditions, and improved standard of living.  Unfortunately, outcomes have not always be productive.

Soa Chiefdom is one of the latest chiefdoms commencing a brand new mining activities.

The lady in this video is Yei Ngaujah, wife of late Aiah Nguajah. She and her husband have been cash crop farmers until the death of her husband.

She is complaining that the new mining company in Soa, bought part of the farm. However, the company has illegally extended their mining to plots of lands they did not buy. Most cash crop farmers like Yei have lost their vegetations.

The farmers are therefore pleading with their Chiefdom authorities, and the central

government to intervene and either protect their crops, or pay for the extra land they using.

this is the only source of income the local citizens have. Taken it away from them without proper arrangements, will destroy their livelihood.

Thank you, brother, Gaskin Faa-suku for the update on the Kono District Library Project.

Our goal is to set up library facilities in all the chiefdoms in Kono District. We are calling on our brothers and sisters from Kono District & and even those from other parts of Sierra Leone, who love their motherland, and our friends in the western countries, to please support us in this project.

If you are from Soa chiefdom please come forward to show your interest and likewise those from Gbense, Tankoro, Lei, Sandor, Fiama chiefdom etc. Please remember that sacrificing $1 for this project is not small. From history in time memorial, we have always been a family together. I still believe we are not far away from that phenomenon. However, we have allowed greed and social injustice to wedge deeper and deeper between us. The emergence of diamond and other precious minerals in Kono have contributed immensely to unequally divide the wealth and opportunities of the district.

While I agree that chiefdoms with diamond have the primary right to benefit from their mineral resources, I also do and strongly believe that every chiefdom should get a percentage of that endowment. I may be dreaming. Unfortunately, while the diamondiferous chiefdoms are still yet to show any significant benefits from these minerals to themselves, the rest of the district is hardly recognized as part of them all.

What we need to see in Kono, and Sierra Leone at large is proper management of our resources. In the present time, we need to understand that minerals are non-renewable resources and will surely be exhausted at one point. History can serve me right that decades back, people used to find diamonds by the roadside, or more so, along the now defunct SLST/NDMC highways. Secondly, we need to have processing machineries for every raw material we produce. If we can, as children of Kono start putting resources together and form cooperation like Lebanese, Indians, Chinese people do on our own soil, that will go a long way a make an impact on the community. We have lots of fruits and vegetables, but no processing mechanism into any forms of biproducts. Lots of fresh water, but foreigners harvest and sell bottled water. Vocational institutions are mainly managed by outsiders. I can go on naming them.

If only we can trust each other and act rather than talk and talk all the time, things will happen. These processing plants, corporations can help subsistent farmers, provide jobs for youths and young adults as well. We have waited for too long and have been planning forever. What we have all not done is to create structures to match foreign businesses in Kono.

The time for name calling has long gone. We all cannot become judges and juries at the same time in getting Kono out of disparity. Attacking people and splitting ourselves to nothingness has and still is our main weapon. These are no longer solutions to what our people are going through.

We need to put dirty politics and irresponsible attitudes aside, and completely ignore any form of politicking when speaking of development in Kono and Sierra Leone. Our traditional leaders also need to see the significance of forming a united front for Kono to move steps forward. We must stop playing blame games and look for what works.

If I should look back in our most recent history, I would gladly mention two outstanding Kono businessmen that used their meager resources to make a difference:

Late NBC Foday (RIP), founder and CEO of Provincial Enterprise Bookshops across Sierra Leone. Every manager in all his bookshops was a son or daughter of Kono District.

Late Kai Foday (RIP), started the one and only Vocational Institute and printing press in Kono.

These are the types of Konos we need to see at this very moment. We have had lots of Konos that have amass wealth from Diamond mining but have got zero investments that would elevate the lives of youths. Instead, they will encourage youths to get into mining pits to do hard labor without pay.

We have all fall short and therefore need to wake up as a people and turn all these abysmal mistakes around. Continuing to look for faults among ourselves will do our people no good. Instead, we must start implementing our ideas, and let them be productive. Let us be the models of positive change.

HOW MUCH LONGER DO WE HAVE TO WAIT?
